North Royalton councilors hear $100,000 estimate to fix flooded baseball fields as program enrollment climbs

Councilwoman Mary Gorjanc told the Streets Committee on May 6 that Recreation Board members reported major flooding problems on the baseball outfields and proposed hiring a landscape architect to evaluate overall site drainage.
Gorjanc said Recreation Board member Mr. Marx estimated the cost to correct the drainage at about $100,000. "Mr. Marx had estimated that project to be around $100,000 to fix the fields," Gorjanc said.
Gorjanc added that the baseball program includes roughly 1,200 participants and that the board is considering partnerships to expand playable fields, including outreach to Royal Redeemer and the YMCA. Resident Sam Cruse suggested looking at parcels near York Road and Aukerman Park as potential sites but councilors and staff noted concerns about flooding, parking and donor restrictions on former farm properties.
Streets Superintendent Kevin Nekl said the department has scheduled seal coating (weather permitting) and line repainting for York Fields and noted the Harley Rake was returned but could be rented again if the boosters request it. Nekl encouraged the Baseball Boosters to contact him to coordinate scraping and re‑dragging of infields if the club wants more immediate work.
Council and the mayor discussed capital prioritization and whether a capital fund could be used; Mayor Paul F. Marnecheck said he would need to check priorities and funding availability. The committee removed Recreation Personnel from the Streets Committee agenda by motion and agreed staff will follow up on options and cost estimates.
Next steps: staff to discuss hiring a landscape architect, present a scope/cost estimate for committee review, and explore potential partnerships for additional field space.
