North Royalton City Council unanimously appointed Councilmember Mary Gorjanc to serve as President of Council effective May 8, 2026 after waiving the usual application and interview timeline.
President Pro Tem Gary Petrusky moved to waive the council rule that requires 21 days for applications and nine days for interviews to fill a vacancy. The motion passed on a roll call vote (Yeas: Matt Coleman, Gary Petrusky, Sarah Wojslaw, Mary Gorjanc, Kaylee Green, Ed Cyngier; Nays: none). Ms. Wojslaw nominated Ms. Gorjanc to fill the unexpired term; Mr. Petrusky seconded and the nomination was approved by the same unanimous roll call.
Council instructed Clerk of Council Helen Dunlap to seek a signed resignation from the ward holder whose office becomes vacant at 11:59 p.m. on May 7, to advertise the Ward vacancy with a deadline of May 28 (21 days from vacancy), and to complete appointment by June 6 if a successor is named.
The appointment followed an executive session convened to consider personnel matters under Ohio Revised Code 121.22(G)(1). No formal objections or alternate nominees were recorded in open session. The council reconvened at 9:08 p.m. and then took the appointment vote.
The action alters the near-term composition of Council and triggers the advertised vacancy process for the departing ward seat. The Council's next regular meeting is scheduled for May 19, 2026, when the new President of Council is expected to be sworn in between May 8 and May 19, per instructions recorded at the meeting.
