Waterford Greenways committee sets May 2 Riverwalk cleanup, addresses trash and maintenance needs

At its March 25 meeting the Community Greenways Advisory Committee confirmed the annual Riverwalk cleanup for May 2, 2026, from 10 a.m. to noon and reviewed recent maintenance issues along the Riverwalk, including trash removal, a dead pine, and planned installation of benches and trash cans.
Debra Hayden‑Schmid, who attended representing the Friends of the Greenways, said volunteer Sue Camilleri picked up about a one‑gallon bag of trash on the Riverwalk and that Waterford Township Trustee Gary Wall collected multiple bags and reported an excessive amount of trash behind Wild Bills Tobacco; the Waterford Township Police Department was notified. Committee members said DPW responded to a March 7 contact‑us report and cleared scattered litter.
Committee members discussed several outstanding maintenance items. One newly planted pine on the Riverwalk extension at Kohler Street has died; Hayden‑Schmid reported Camilleri had contacted contractor Precision Landscaping and the tree should be replaced soon. DPW, which committee members said was short‑staffed over the winter, has received the benches and trash cans and expects to place them on concrete pads along the Riverwalk by Memorial Day.
Organizing the cleanup, Jacquelynn Brown finalized the flyer and pre‑registration link and will bring a full‑page printout of the registration QR code and a manual sign‑up list to the event. Roman Wasylkevych volunteered to circulate the flyer across township channels and to walk the Riverwalk a few days before the event to finalize day‑of tasks. Camilleri expressed interest in concentrating efforts on the Riverwalk expansion area, mulching new trees and repainting the phone booth if weather permits.
The committee also noted several small, actionable items for the cleanup: remove a shopping cart near the M‑59 bridge, replace vertical wooden fence posts at the same location, and remove remaining graffiti on a south‑end building wall. The silt fencing in the Riverwalk Connector will remain to protect against construction debris if adjacent properties are developed.
The meeting closed with a reminder of scheduled email reminders to Greenways supporters on April 3, April 27 and May 1, and with the committee adjourning at 8:22 p.m.
