Trustees adopt updated building and electrical codes to 2024/2023 standards

Village of Four Seasons trustees approved Ordinance 25-08 on Dec. 11, adopting the 2024 international/technical building codes and updating the national electrical code to the 2023 edition.
The ordinance amends chapter 8 (building and building regulations) to align the villages code base with the most recent model codes used regionally and stated reasons included keeping enforcement tools current and avoiding legal and procedural confusion that can come from relying on outdated code editions.
Town staff and municipal counsel emphasized the practical benefits of updating the code. "I fully support . . . updating that information," municipal attorney Todd Miller said during the discussion, noting earlier cases where enforcement relied on older code citations.
Trustees read the ordinance aloud and moved to adopt; a motion, second and vote approved the change. The vote was recorded as passing and the ordinance will be incorporated into the village code per standard adoption procedures.
Why it matters Bringing the villages building and electrical codes into alignment with current model-code editions helps the building department, inspectors and legal staff apply up-to-date technical standards. It also reduces ambiguity for builders and homeowners about the edition that governs plan reviews, permitting and enforcement.
Next steps Staff will update permit guidance and circulation documents to reference the new code editions and advise applicants and contractors to use the 2024 technical/code and 2023 NEC standards for new submittals.
