Harvey Cedars approves appointments, playground equipment contract and permits; residents press parking, police accreditation and signage concerns

The Harvey Cedars Board of Commissioners on Sept. 23 approved a slate of routine municipal actions and heard several public comments on local concerns.
Among the measures adopted were Resolution 2024-111 appointing Christopher Hackett as part-time Tax Assessor (partial term beginning Sept. 23, 2024; a four-year appointment effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2029 at an annual salary of $23,465.00), Resolution 2024-112 awarding a contract for playground exercise equipment to MRC, Inc. in the amount of $20,482.54 under a State contract, and Resolution 2024-114 authorizing a four-month extension of workers' compensation benefits for Patrolman Daniel Grundtisch. The board also approved Resolution 2024-115 to pay bills and voted to permit three community uses of public property: the Association of Surf Angling Clubs' Oct. 12 ramp use, St. Francis' LBI 18 Mile Run route on Oct. 13, and a neighborhood block party at 8207 Bay Terrace on Oct. 5 (rain date Oct. 12). All votes were recorded as unanimous (Mayor John M. Imperiale and Commissioners Joseph F. Gieger and Paul G. Rice).
Commissioner Paul G. Rice announced that the Finance Department had secured an AA bond rating and thanked Chief Financial Officer Rebecca Wessler for her work. "The Finance Department was able to secure a AA bond rating," Rice said, praising Wessler.
During privilege of the floor, residents raised several issues. Walt Naisby asked when and where the borough's beach replenishment would occur; Mayor Imperiale replied that the work would start in November or December and focus on streets beginning at 76th Street and south. Robert Kaplon questioned the accreditation organization that provides the Harvey Cedars Police Department its accreditation, calling it possibly a volunteer organization and asking why the borough would partner with them; Mayor Imperiale said he would contact Chief Burnaford to follow up. Jim Fritz and other speakers urged the board to review parking rules after patrons of Azzurri reportedly used the HCH Realty lot; the commissioners said they are looking into commercial zoning. Sue Ellen Riffkin reported faded metallic street signs and asked how Streetscape Projects were funded; commissioners said the project was paid mostly with grants with the remainder covered by the borough.
