Cheraw council advances new historic-district design guidelines after public hearing

The Cheraw Town Council on Jan. 9 opened a public hearing and then approved on first reading an ordinance to repeal the town’s preservation and maintenance manual and adopt new historic-district design guidelines.
Town staff member Brian said the updated guidelines have been publicly posted and available at town hall and that the revision process has taken about 18 months. "The last volume was put out in 1986," Sophia said, and called the new document "very user friendly," noting added graphics and clearer language for staff and the board that reviews architecture and design. Sophia’s affiliation was recorded in the meeting as "from the column."
The council and staff described the changes as an update to the town’s working guidance for historic properties; council members noted the draft had been approved by the board of architecture review and the joint county planning commission before the hearing. After discussion and no public speakers recorded on the record, the council conducted the first reading of Ordinance 2026-15 and voted in favor.
The ordinance is intended to replace the previous preservation manual with a modernized set of design guidelines to guide review of work in the historic district. Council members directed that the updated guidance be posted and that town staff continue to provide copies at town hall for public review.
The ordinance passed its first reading; the council will return the item for subsequent readings as required by local ordinance procedures.
