Commissioners honor Alex Zendejas, Carmen Duarte and adopt 'Miracle Jeans Month' for Children's Hospital

El Paso County’s commissioners used portions of their July 6 meeting to adopt several ceremonial resolutions and present community awards.

The court congratulated Alejandro (Alex) Zendejas on his selection to the United States men’s national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and declared a World Cup season for the county. A remote speaker identified by the court as Mrs. Zendejas thanked the court and described the honor of representing the region.

The court also recognized Carmen Duarte with a resolution citing decades of volunteer and civic service. Family members and longtime colleagues delivered tributes on her behalf, recalling decades of school-based work, senior services and party organizing. The mariachi group performed one of Duarte’s favorite songs as part of the recognition.

In addition, the court declared July 2026 as 'Miracle Jeans Month' to support the El Paso Children's Hospital Foundation and the Children's Miracle Network. Human resources and foundation representatives explained logistics for departmental jean days (recommended minimum $5 donation per designated day), a QR-code donation option and a culminating check presentation to recognize top fundraising departments.
