Helmetta officials praise storm response as public works flags equipment troubles; council approves $5,845 payment for local road work

At the Jan. 21 meeting the Helmetta council heard a lengthy Public Works update read by Councilwoman Bohinski that described extended snow and holiday operations, ongoing truck maintenance challenges and coordination with state water authorities.
Bohinski read a report that said crews "completed snow equipment maintenance after each storm and worked extended and overnight hours during multiple storm events," and that the department was "leaning towards a fuel pump issue" on the 2008 F-550 while another vehicle (the 350) was out of service with a blown engine. The report added that Public Works handled curbside rounds, litter removal, garbage collection, storm-drain safety, cold patch road repairs, playground maintenance and water-system coordination with NJ Water and DEP inspections. Mayor Chris Slavicek thanked Public Works and the police for their work during the recent storms.
Separately, the council approved Resolution 2026-54 authorizing Payment No. 2 to Z Brothers Concrete Contractors, Inc. in the amount of $5,845.51 for the Sutton Place, York Drive and Madison Drive NJDOT Municipal Aid Program (FY2024). Borough Engineer Kevin Meade inspected the work and recommended the payment, reporting that the contractor had completed approximately 79 percent of the contract; payment is conditioned on certified payroll and manning reports.
The engineer also said he is coordinating with NJDOT for final sign-off on the Sutton Place work and expects to close out the Borough Hall parking-lot paving project pending suitable weather.
What happens next: Public Works will continue winter operations while staff assesses vehicle repairs and maintenance; the borough will process contractor pay applications as certified payroll and reports are provided.
