The Borough of Helmetta approved a resolution authorizing a 10-year Middlesex County Shared Radio Network Agreement, joining the county's P25 Phase II, 700/800-megahertz public-safety radio system.
Under the agreement the county furnishes radio-network infrastructure at no cost to the borough. The borough must provide, program and maintain its own portable and mobile radios, ensure compliance with Federal Communications Commission rules and the MCRN administrator's governance, and appoint two liaisons to request programming or database changes. The agreement requires confidentiality of municipal radio programming and includes indemnification provisions. It allows termination on at least 90 days' written notice.
The resolution appeared on the consent agenda the council approved unanimously. The packet and agreement text specify that municipalities remain responsible for equipment purchases; the transcript and attached "Schedule A" do not specify any one-time or ongoing charges the borough may face to acquire, program or replace radios, and those costs remain to be determined by borough staff.
What happens next: Borough staff will coordinate with the Middlesex County Radio Bureau Administrator and provide the two designated liaisons for programming and user-group participation before radios are activated on the network.
