The Browns Valley City Council on June 8 approved a package of routine business items and heard a resident’s public comment about neighborhood maintenance.
The council unanimously approved the May 26, 2026 regular meeting minutes and accepted claims totaling $114,789.27, which the minutes break down as wages of $12,949.11 (payable June 1) and claims of $101,840.16 (payable June 8). Motions approving the minutes and the claims were moved and seconded as recorded in the minutes.
On routine business, the council approved renewing certificates of deposit #8249 and #3895 at a seven-month special interest rate of 3.45%; approved a Transient Merchant License for Fireside Burger Box (applicant Julie Birchem) at $15 per day; and unanimously hired Steven Johnson as an independent contractor (1099) to serve as a tour guide for the Sam Brown Cabin. The council adopted Resolution 26-16 accepting a $1,000 donation from Greg and Cari Haanen and Resolution 26-17 approving the roster of 2026 election judges.
During the public-comment portion, resident Laurie Owen raised concerns about a recent water break involving a fire hydrant, a dumpster located near her property, and neighbor lawn maintenance. Staff provided information on the status of the water break and maintenance activities, and the council directed staff to follow up.
The meeting closed with calendar items and scheduling: June 19 (closed holiday), Sam Brown Valley Days June 26–28, and the next council meeting scheduled for June 22 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 6:44 p.m.
Next steps: Staff will follow up on Ms. Owen’s concerns; procurement and contracting steps will proceed for the hires and pump purchase per council approvals.
