Henry Hudson leaders say schools on track for reopening as facilities projects near completion

Superintendent Dr. Tara Beams told the Henry Hudson Regional PK-12 Board of Education on Aug. 20 that district schools are on schedule to reopen in two weeks and that summer facilities work has left the buildings “looking really great.” Dr. Beams specifically thanked facilities staff and head custodians for preparing schools for the start of the year.
The district’s brickwork project at multiple sites is on target to finish on Sept. 2, Business Administrator Janet Sherlock said, and the new phone system is about 95% complete with the final stage expected in September. Sherlock also reported that testing at Highlands Elementary School’s hill is complete and the district is awaiting final feasibility and cost reports from the architect on options to stabilize the slope and install a softball field.
Board President Richard Colangelo praised Facilities Supervisor Anthony Neggers and custodial staff for summer projects that refreshed schools’ appearance ahead of students’ return. During the Superintendent’s report, Dr. Beams also said the district will form a committee to review recommended teacher-evaluation models and noted the state’s Aug. 13 notice that statewide testing will shift to an adaptive assessment format; district staff are awaiting additional guidance and training.
Board members asked that the softball-field planning be shared publicly as the project develops; Ms. Regina Melnyk said she “feels that the softball field project should be shared with the public along the way,” and Janet Sherlock and Mr. Colangelo said a presentation will be scheduled prior to proceeding.
The updates come as the district finalizes summer work and prepares school buildings and staff for the new year. The board moved on several facility-use requests and other consent items that support school operations; those approvals were reflected in subsequent roll-call votes.
