Dubois County keeps political-affiliation cap for Tourism Commission in 2-1 vote

The Dubois County Board of Commissioners voted 2-1 June 15 to amend the county tourism commission ordinance to preserve a restriction preventing more than a simple majority of members from sharing the same political party, effective July 1, 2026.
The Dubois County Board of Commissioners on June 15 adopted Ordinance 2026-09, amending prior tourism commission rules to require that no more than a single majority of the seven-member commission be affiliated with the same political party. Commissioners Nick Hostetter and Serice Stenftenagel voted in favor; President Chad A. Blessinger cast the lone dissenting vote.
The ordinance restates the commission’s composition and appointing authorities: two members by the Board of Commissioners, one by the County Council, three by the Mayor of Jasper (two of whom must work in hotel or motel businesses), and one by the Mayor of Huntingburg. Terms are two years beginning Jan. 1, with initial staggered one-year terms for two appointees. The ordinance amends prior County Ordinances 91-12 and 97-07 and becomes effective July 1, 2026.
Commissioners discussed the political-affiliation requirement and the need to align appointment language with changes to state law that affected city appointing authority under I.C. references included in the ordinance. The board approved the measure by motion, and the ordinance was signed and recorded in the county code.
