Open Space Board: Wildwood beach-end bid under estimate, staff to add signage at Harborview Park

The Cape May County Open Space Board reviewed construction and site updates for multiple county park projects at its March 17 meeting in the County Administration Building.
Jake Mericle, senior planning aide, led a multi-site presentation that listed current projects including Harborview Park in Cape May, David Douglass Sr. Memorial Park (Lower Township), Beach Crossover and Amenities (Sea Isle City), Clarence and Georgiana Davies Sports Complex (Middle Township), Sandcastle Park (Ocean City), Eco-Park (Woodbine), 96th Street Park (Stone Harbor), Heather Road Fishing Pier (Wildwood Crest), and several beach street-end and historic preservation projects. Will Hanson, planning director, told the board that the bid award for the Roberts and Lincoln Avenues Beach Street Ends project in Wildwood came in lower than the estimated construction cost, generating savings for the Open Space Fund.
Kevin Quinn, division director of Open Space, said Harborview Park currently lacks signage attributing work to the Open Space Board or Cape May County; staff will coordinate with Cape May officials to install a sign. Commissioner Bobby Barr asked about a ribbon cutting for 96th Street Park in Stone Harbor; Hanson said he would contact the borough to arrange one. Quinn also reported that the safety surface at the Eco-Park in Woodbine had not yet been poured where the tree canopy is being installed.
Planning staff reported various municipal follow-ups: a site visit to the Ocean City Rowing Boosters found additional work needed before an application would be ready; West Wildwood has preliminary interest in a rail-line-related application but must finish additional work; and Ocean City was seeking demolition quotes for a Bayside Center structure but was reminded written permission from the County Commissioners would be required before demolition could proceed. Quinn said staff will meet with Cape May MAC about potential projects at the Physick Estate and that MP 25-03 (10th Street Wharf) is scheduled to present at the May 19 meeting; Ocean City indicated it would not oppose that application but did not state explicit support.
The board did not receive public comment on these items during the meeting. The board recessed for a closed session at 12:26 p.m. and reconvened at 1:13 p.m. before adjourning at 1:14 p.m.
