St. Clair creates tuition reimbursement to retain police; up to $8,000 over three years

The St. Clair Board of Aldermen on Nov. 17 approved an ordinance establishing a tuition reimbursement program for police officers intended to improve recruitment and retention.
Administrator Wilson described the program: eligible officers who attend an academy approved by the Missouri Department of Public Safety will receive one-third of their tuition back each year for three years, for a total reimbursement of up to $8,000 if the officer remains employed for the full three-year period. Payments are distributed annually and added to the officer’s normal paycheck, with a final payment at the end of the third year.
Wilson said the program was discussed during the budget workshop and strategic planning sessions and recommended the board approve the ordinance. The board read Bill 2025-50 by title and approved it; the bill became Ordinance 2245.
The program’s administration will require staff to track eligible participants and disburse reimbursements according to tenure and academy approval standards.
