During the council’s public-comment period, resident and industry participant Stephen Preer (208 Paris) told the Borough Council he has concerns about the way the borough’s cannabis ordinance is being applied.
"I'm here. I want to talk about uh our local cannabis," Preer said, adding that he had noticed deviations from the ordinance in hours of operation and believed a wholesale facility was located within 200 feet of a retail site—an apparent conflict with borough rules. He also asked the council where tax-revenue information and enforcement data could be found, saying such data would help persuade other municipalities to adopt similar businesses.
A council member responded that the borough had received complaints and that the solicitor has revised substantial portions of the zoning rules; the council introduced an ordinance that officials said is intended to address many of the questions raised by Preer. The council did not provide detailed tax-revenue figures during the session.
Why it matters: Local compliance and clear data-sharing affect both enforcement and how municipal leaders promote or regulate a new industry. Preer framed his comment as both an enforcement concern and a request for greater transparency so Brooklawn can point to a working model when speaking with other towns.
What the council will do next: The solicitor’s zoning revisions were introduced at the meeting; those ordinance changes will return for further hearings and votes. The council also indicated it would provide an introduced ordinance copy to the commenter on request.
