The Closter Board of Education on May 21 appointed Gregory Shih to fill the board vacancy created earlier this year, voting 6–1 to make the appointment effective June 26, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2025. The seat will be placed on the November 2025 ballot for election to a full three‑year term, the board noted.
Board President Ms. Finkelstein opened the session and the board moved into a brief closed session to deliberate candidates. After reconvening, Ms. Estrems moved to nominate Mr. Shih; Mr. Choi seconded the motion. The roll‑call vote recorded yeas from Mr. Choi, Ms. Micera, Ms. Argenziano, Ms. Estrems, Mr. Paldi and Ms. Finkelstein; Ms. Lee was the sole nay vote.
Superintendent Vincent McHale and Business Administrator Floro M. Villanueva, Jr. outlined the procedural steps: the appointed candidate must clear a background check and will be sworn in at the June 26 board meeting. Mr. Villanueva told applicants the appointed term runs through Dec. 31, 2025, and will appear as an unexpired/regular contest on the November ballot in accordance with state law.
The board publicly thanked all applicants for applying and encouraged community members who were not selected to consider running in the November election. The board did not record public testimony reported in the minutes on the appointment beyond procedural remarks and the roll‑call tally.
The board adjourned at 10:27 p.m. after a brief closed session later in the agenda to address HIB and personnel matters.
