Tenakill Middle School honored after New Jersey Science Olympiad state championship; team fundraising for nationals

The Closter Board of Education on April 9 recognized Tenakill Middle Schoolstudents for winning the 2025 New Jersey Science Olympiad state championship and authorized student mentors and fundraising support ahead of the national tournament.
Superintendent Vincent McHale, who presented certificates with Board President Ms. Finkelstein, listed team members by name and thanked advisors and parent groups. "Tonight, we honor our Science Olympiad Team members in recognition of winning the New Jersey State Championship for 2025," McHale said, and he thanked the volunteer high school students who are mentoring the team.
The Board approved, by roll call, a motion permitting Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest (NVRHS-D) students to mentor the Tenakill team after school from April 10 through May 22, 2025. McHale told the Board and public the team will travel to the National Science Olympiad in Lincoln, Nebraska, in May 2025 and is conducting fundraisers, including a Spirit Gear sale and a GoFundMe campaign. He also acknowledged financial support from the Korean Parent Group, the Closter Coaches Athletic Association and Closter Kumon.
The Board's approval also included routine permissions for student travel; the Curriculum and Instruction Committee's motion to approve field trips and mentors passed on a unanimous roll-call vote. The superintendent encouraged community donations to the team's fundraising pages and said the district posted links to related resources on the district website.
Next steps: the team will prepare for nationals with help from the approved high-school mentors and from district staff who approved the travel and fundraising plans.
