Council orders removal of $1,624.55 nuisance-abatement charge from current owner’s tax statement

A Shelbina resident told the council Nov. 10 that a $1,624.55 nuisance-abatement plus penalties had been attached to a home he purchased this year and had not been disclosed in the title search. The council voted unanimously to remove the assessment from the current owner’s tax statement and to attempt to reassign the charge to the previous owner where legally and administratively possible.
Aaron Kendrick brought the complaint during the citizen-participation portion of the meeting, saying the charge appeared after his purchase and created an unexpected tax liability. Council Member James Simpson moved to remove the nuisance-abatement and penalty charges from the current owner’s tax statement and to reassign them to the prior owner if the tax process allowed. The motion was seconded by Nick Broughton and approved by the council.
Council did not confirm in the meeting whether reassignment was guaranteed; staff were directed to pursue reassignment where possible under law and to report back with findings. The meeting minutes record the dollar amount reported by the resident and the council’s unanimous vote to remove the charge from the current owner’s statement.
