The Silver Creek Township Planning & Zoning Commission voted Jan. 7, 2025, to grant a variance allowing a deck for Zeigler Custom Homes to be built partially inside the Locke Lake building setback; the motion carried 8-0 with Member Mark Egge recorded as abstaining. The request covered a new dwelling whose primary structure was reported as compliant but whose deck encroached on the lake setback.
The commission record says the house complies with applicable requirements but the deck ‘is partially within the setback from the lake.’ Chairman Chris Klein explained that moving the plans closer to the road “would interfere with the septic system,” and the commission heard a neighbor, James Lunde, voice support for the request. Member Tom Vanek made the motion to approve the variance; Member Mike Helman seconded.
The commission’s minutes note no objections from board members or guests other than the single abstention by Member Mark Egge. The minutes do not record further conditions attached to the variance or any additional technical findings, nor do they specify a formal written determination beyond the recorded motion and vote.
