Open Space Committee backs trail maps, bench dedication plans and 150th co-sponsorship

The Merrimac Open Space Committee on Nov. 18 moved to fund printed trail maps and agreed to partner with a community group on 150th-anniversary events, while also reviewing recent volunteer trail work and plans for a bench dedication.

The committee approved a motion to produce 200 maps of each trail for up to $150; Mary Ann Glennon moved and Dawn Ackerman seconded the motion, which carried unanimously. Members also discussed purchasing a chainsaw if remaining FY'26 funds permit.

Trail volunteers were active in recent work: eight volunteers cleared the entrance to the Marshview Trail and checked the status of a new trail loop. Mark Taylor, identified as a representative from Con Com, reported that a new bench had been installed by the beaver pond and said he received a donated cement bench the committee recommended for installation at the Red Oak Hill Trail entrance on Winter Street. Committee members asked follow-up questions: Sandra Venner will check whether the Cobbler's Brook Greenway bench is movable, and Dawn Ackerman will contact the family linked to the installed bench to confirm whether they are comfortable with a relocation or dedication.

On community events, Neighbors for Naure (N4N) asked whether the committee would co-sponsor croquet events at Carey on first Sundays from April through October, 3–5 p.m. Sandra Venner and Sue Simmons moved to co-sponsor; the motion passed. Lucy, who was absent, suggested leading a winter/early spring walk (tentatively Feb. 21 on the McLaren Trail) and an April 25 walk to the beaver pond and new bench, possibly timed to coincide with a bench dedication; Dawn Ackerman will follow up on scheduling.

The committee adjourned at 6:20 p.m.; its next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
