Council receives public safety, recreation and natural resources reports; praises county OEM technology

During the Sept. 16 work session, councilmembers presented committee reports covering public safety, recreation and tourism, and natural resources.
Councilmember Frank Dallahan read reports for the Fire Department, Police Department, Beach Patrol and Office of Emergency Management and commended their work. Council President Jennifer Gensemer praised the GeoFencing used during Hurricane Erin through the Code Red program and credited the county Office of Emergency Management for advances in public notification technology: "The Geo Fencing used during Hurricane Erin with the Code Red Program was great," Gensemer said.
Councilmember Victor Foschini summarized that summer programs are winding down and fall programs are starting, detailed coordination with the elementary school on a beach badge design contest (winner receives four badges for next season), and listed upcoming events including a Car Show on Oct. 11 and Island Holiday Weekend Nov. 28–29. Councilmember Robin Casper reported that young birds that could not yet fly did not survive coastal flooding from the recent hurricane, described switching beach fencing to its fall configuration (removing string and changing signage to keep areas closed for migratory birds), announced new fall hours at the Stone Harbor Museum and welcomed the museum’s new vice president.
