Stone Harbor events draw visitors: paddle tennis donates $5,000; farmers market reports strong turnout

Councilmembers used the Recreation & Tourism report to highlight a string of summer events and a market update that officials said supported local businesses and tourism.

Tom King, a resident of 7‑mile Island who said he resides in Avalon, presented a $5,000 check to the Borough to thank Stone Harbor for hosting a World Class Paddle Tennis competition. King said the world’s top 12 contenders competed and praised Stone Harbor’s courts and attractions, saying the players were "thrilled to be here in Stone Harbor" and that many planned to bring family members back next year.

Councilmember Victor Foschini also reviewed upcoming special events on the agenda, including a Chamber of Commerce Sidewalk Sale, "Savor September," and a Contractors Day hosted by Seashore Ace. Foschini noted the basketball playoffs in early August were successful, the Women's Bocchi League concludes tomorrow, and pickleball and tennis will continue through Labor Day.

Will Boyer, manager of the Stone Harbor Farmers Market, reported that a recent Wednesday pop‑up market drew record attendance. "Social media has helped the market bloom exponentially," Boyer said, and he told council the pop‑up used 25 vendor spots (down from the usual 37 on Sundays) to accommodate vendors who had earlier raised concerns about trash collection and back‑door access.

Mayor Carney and council thanked the presenters. No formal council action was taken on the donation at the work session; King said he is eager to host the event again and to encourage visiting players to return with families.
