Design Review Board approves Laurens County DSS sign after member recuses

On April 16, the Design Review Board approved a sign application for the Laurens County Department of Social Services at 211 North Broad Street (Tax Map 901-1206-001).
Mr. Windham, speaking for city staff, described the sign as the typical blue sign used for state agencies and said it is intended to help pedestrian traffic find the DSS offices. He noted that the applicant was also considering parking-area signs to denote employee and visitor parking but that those parking signs would not require submission to the Design Review Board.
During discussion, Mr. Laird disclosed a potential conflict, saying, "I will state that I work for an agency that has contracts with the Department of Social Services, so I probably should recuse myself from the vote." The transcript records that Mr. Laird did recuse himself from the vote.
After the recusal, the board voted to approve the sign application; the transcript records the motion passed unanimously among voting members present. No conditions or further review requests were recorded for the sign application.
