Marquette County Board delays action on Kubick Aviation contract, schedules special meeting

The board first approved an amended agenda to add a closed session under Michigan Compiled Laws MCL 15.268(1)(e) and to move the Kubick contract termination discussion to item 10b. Commissioner LaLonde made the motion to amend the agenda; Commissioner Alholm seconded, and the motion passed 4-0.
Commissioner Nordeen moved that the board go into closed session to consult with its attorney regarding trial or settlement strategy in specific pending litigation, citing MCL 15.268(1)(e). Commissioner Alholm seconded; the board approved the closed session on a roll-call vote with four ayes and two absent members. The board recessed briefly and returned to open session at about 4:42 p.m.
After the closed session, Commissioner Nordeen moved that the board "take no action and schedule a special meeting on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. to consider documents and information concerning Kubick Aviation, the current FBO." Commissioner Alholm seconded; the motion passed on roll call with Commissioners Nordeen, Alholm, LaLonde and Chairperson Derocha voting aye and Commissioners Numinen and Benzie absent.
Jordann Schwandt, who identified herself as representing Kubick Aviation Services, Inc., spoke during public comment before the closed session and told the board she hoped the county could continue the partnership with Kubick, saying the company had "a good relationship in the past." The meeting record does not include a formal rebuttal or denial from county staff in response to the contract-allegation language found on the agenda item heading ("Non-Payment & Contract Default").
During late additions and public comment, Commissioner Fred Benzie (participating by Zoom) said he would return to Marquette on April 27 and recommended the county consider selling fuel at Sawyer. Commissioner Nordeen commented that he "would like to find a way forward on the FBO issues," indicating continued deliberations are expected.
The board adjourned at approximately 4:50 p.m. The special meeting set for April 28 is scheduled specifically to consider the documents and information the board referenced; no formal termination or final outcome was recorded April 24.
