County approves Teamsters contract, awards Perkins Park work, allocates gaming funds and makes appointments

At its June 16 meeting the Marquette County Board of Commissioners approved several routine and administrative items alongside a contentious airport resolution.
The board approved a letter-of-agreement with Teamsters Local Union No. 406 covering FBO positions at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport for the period June 1, 2026 through Dec. 31, 2027. Administrator DuRay read the contract language and the board adopted the amended collective-bargaining agreement by roll call (ayes recorded from Commissioners Nordeen, Alholm, Numinen, Benzie, LaLonde and Chairperson Joseph Derocha).
Sven Gonstead explained that the Perkins Park domestic hot-water system was beyond its useful life and required full replacement after emergency repairs during the 2025 season. Staff ran a formal RFP after receiving quotes, received one proposal by the May 11 deadline, and recommended awarding Prime Specialty Contracting, LLC of Marquette the work not to exceed $16,912.00. The board approved the award with funding from the Park Reserves.
On grants, the board accepted KBIC two-percent pass-through allocations as listed by staff. Several county divisions and regional partners received funds; examples include Marquette County Aging Services (received $3,500 from a $7,500 request), Marquette County Health Department Suicide Prevention Alliance (received $3,500 of $7,000 requested), and Superior Watershed Partnership (received $11,000 of $50,000 requested). The board voted to allocate the funds as presented.
The board appointed Helen Wilson to a three-year regular term on the Marquette County Solid Waste Authority and appointed Jaclyn Stark as the Marquette City appointee to the authority; both motions passed unanimously.
Earlier in the meeting the board approved the review of claims and accounts, reporting $826,957.50 in expenditures for the May 29–June 11, 2026 period and a biweekly payroll of $930,427.65. A separate motion to approve check #239542 for $1,059.87 payable to Alger-Delta Co-Op Electric passed with a recorded vote described in the minutes noting two commissioners did not participate in that specific vote (the minutes record the motion as adopted with a 4-0 tally and note an abstention and an absence from the vote).
Finally, the board moved into closed session under MCL 15.268(1)(h) for a matter exempt from disclosure and scheduled a special meeting for June 26, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. to hear a GS FOIA appeal. The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:24 p.m.
