Brooklawn to accept donated pickleball reservation system; DOT and open-space grants to fund local projects

Brooklawn councilors on Dec. 19 reviewed a proposal from Pickle Tile and Pod Play to install a court-reservation and scoreboard system at the borough's pickleball court at no upfront cost to the borough.
The vendor proposed installing a midcourt metal post with a weatherproof TV, an overhead camera and Ethernet cabling to enable online reservations and on-site score displays. Councilors were told the company would pay installation and that the borough might face a modest monthly subscription fee for the reservation system; the vendor described the subscription as potentially in the low tens of dollars per month during system development.
Council members expressed support for a demonstration pilot so long as ongoing costs and data/privacy implications are clarified. "If it's free, I'll keep it free; if it's not free, I'll bring it back," one councilor said.
Separately, officials announced two grants that could help the waterfront and downtown. The borough received informal notice of a $154,000 Department of Transportation grant for Broadway streetscaping, ADA and safety improvements and a $25,000 open-space grant to extend decking at the park behind the courts. Council discussed coordinating discretionary aid applications to build on the DOT award.
Council asked staff to verify subscription terms with the pickleball vendor, confirm internet and camera requirements (members flagged some current lagging camera feeds), and develop project scopes for the DOT and open-space grants.
