Brooklawn plans auction of borough homes, will use deed restrictions and proceeds for budget relief

Councilors said deed restrictions will accompany the sales to require owner-occupancy and prevent short-term rental for five years. One official said the deed will require buyers to live in the home or resell to an owner-occupant, language the borough finalized after earlier discussions.
Officials noted the sales are intended to replenish borough reserves ahead of the 2024 budget; one speaker described a $700,000 surplus need that the sales would help offset and said revenue from the two homes could reduce the borough’s planned use of reserves.
Council discussed timing and eligibility issues and emphasized the importance of advertising and deed language to ensure compliance. No individual buyer or sale price was announced at the work session.
Council members asked staff to continue preparing auction materials and to include the expected proceeds in next year’s budget calculations.
