Lockport council reviews storm response, public concerns and approves insurance contract

The Lockport Town Council on Sept. 24 accepted a police report with storm-response updates, authorized a property insurance contract, heard several public comments including a housing complaint, and voted to set a public hearing to consider increasing council salaries.
Police Chief David Harrelson presented the department’s report and listed upcoming community events: Blue Mass services Sept. 25 and Sept. 29, and Night Out Against Crime on Oct. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Town Hall. Chief Harrelson warned residents not to approach officers while they are on calls or traffic stops "because it can put his officers and possibly themselves in danger," and the council accepted the report by motion.
The council authorized Mayor Barry Plaisance to sign a property insurance contract with Arthur J. Gallagher; the motion, made by Councilman Rodney Hartman and seconded by Councilman Gary Acosta, carried unanimously. Representatives from GIS and engineering firm T Baker Smith presented engineering updates during the meeting; no detailed engineering decisions are recorded in the minutes.
During public comment, resident Dee Verdin raised problems with her residence at the Les Maison de Bayou Lafourche housing units. Councilman Tyler Detillier later addressed Ms. Verdin’s concerns on the record. Other public commenters included James Brabham, who spoke about community events, Alan Badeaux, who announced a veterans event in the park on Nov. 9, 2024, Brian Curole, who expressed personal concerns, and Dona Breaux, who spoke about her campaign.
Council members reported on hurricane-related repairs and community assistance. Mayor Plaisance noted that trees and signs came down during the storm, described ongoing drainage work, thanked Parish President Archie Chiasson, public works staff and Entergy (Paula Rome) for their assistance, and said DSNAP benefits will be available to Lafourche Parish residents. Councilman Rodney Hartman moved — and Councilman Gary Acosta seconded — a motion to call for a public hearing to consider increasing the council’s salary; the motion carried unanimously.
With no further business, the council adjourned at 7:18 PM. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15, 2024.
