Several residents used the public-comment portion of the Town of Lockport meeting on July 16 to raise social and community-service concerns.
Ralph Sapia urged the council to start a suicide awareness and prevention program, citing the recent losses of his grandson, Holden Breaux, and another resident, Luke Martin. He said children in the audience want to plant a memorial tree. "The kids in the audience wanted to plant a tree in memory of his grandson, Holden Breaux," Sapia said; Mayor Barry Plaisance and the council expressed condolences. Councilman Tyler Detillier later asked the council to add a proclamation for Suicide Awareness Month in September.
James Brabham spoke about community events and the town food pantry, urging continued support. Dona Breaux thanked the council for its assistance and asked the council to develop activities for older children in town.
Stelly Kelly, representing Woodmen of the World, announced plans for a blessing box at Town Hall "for people to put canned goods, food, baby items, hygiene products, etc for anyone who needs them," to provide ongoing assistance to residents.
During public comment William "Billy" Disbrow announced he is running for Town Council in the upcoming election.
The council acknowledged the comments and noted follow-up items: the mayor asked for addresses to investigate reported unclean or unfenced pools, and the council later scheduled a public hearing on Suicide Awareness Month and similar matters as part of regular reports and agenda items.
