Tama and Toledo hear recreation board updates; STC Rec asks each city for $1,000 for FY27

Tama Mayor Brian Hanus and Toledo Mayor Brian Sokol heard updates from two local recreation boards at a Nov. 17 special joint meeting in Tama.
Shayna Zmolek, president of the Aquatic Recreation Board, thanked both cities for their continued support and said the pool “had a good year.” Zmolek told the councils the facility celebrated its 20th anniversary, the boiler was replaced, and the cities contributed additional funds that allowed “large wage increases.” She said the pool averaged about 232 people per day and that sales were down, a trend the board said may force it to cap future pass and admission increases. Zmolek said the Aquatic Board is not requesting additional allocations from the cities this year; the transcript records the current contribution level as $90,850 annually from each city.
Chelsea Ahrens, president of the STC Rec Board, thanked both councils for support of K–8 recreation programs and said the program “relies on parents and volunteers.” Ahrens requested an additional $1,000 from each city for fiscal year 2027 to support operations. She noted Tama currently allows the Rec Board to use the former Tama Papermill at no cost, but that building has no heat or running water for winter use; the board said it is seeking a long‑term indoor facility.
No council questions or formal votes on either recreation request were recorded in the meeting minutes. The meeting adjourned at 5:25 p.m. after a motion by Robinson, seconded by Babinat, with all present voting by voice.
