West Amwell advances Hewitt Park upgrades, reviews bids and drainage options

The West Amwell Township Parks & Recreation Committee on April 16 reviewed contractor bids and engineering plans for upgrades at Hewitt Park and scheduled a site walk with Van Cleef Engineering to evaluate outstanding issues.
Committee member and Town Council member Bob Balaam said he will meet with Van Cleef Engineering representatives Rob O'Brien and Tom Dickerson and invited committee members to attend a site walk to review bids received for fencing, the snack-shack exterior, scoreboard and lighting. The minutes note that a transition between engineering firms delayed earlier work but that issue is now resolved.
The playground project was reported as scheduled for completion within the week. Committee members also discussed trail routing: because of wetlands and wooded areas adjacent to Hewitt Park, plans will be scaled back and rerouted to avoid sensitive areas while providing a functional perimeter walking trail.
A significant operational item is drainage affecting the soccer field. The committee identified runoff from an adjacent higher-elevation property as the source. Rather than immediately pursuing a full drainage system, members discussed a lower-cost option to regrade and re-pitch the field; committee leaders said engineers will evaluate whether that approach will sufficiently address the problem.
Next steps include the scheduled site walk with Van Cleef Engineering to review the bids and drainage options, after which the committee will coordinate selection or further refinements to the plans.
