Council agrees to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation; manager reports sidewalk, school crossing updates

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with the process to seek a Broadband Ready Communities designation and to authorize the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to serve as the municipal broadband champion.
Councilor Kerns moved and Councilor Joyce seconded proceeding with a public meeting and passing the resolution authorizing the application; the motion carried unanimously. Borough staff said the designation is intended to create opportunities for additional internet service providers to enter the borough by signaling streamlined permitting practices.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells provided multiple administrative updates: the TA Set‑Aside sidewalk project is scheduled to begin July 15; a virtual South County EMS study meeting is set for July 11; a feasibility study for a school crossing was approved and the council agreed to use WRA, LLP as the county‑appointed engineer to complete that work. Manager Wells also listed upcoming community events and meetings including the ECBA meeting on July 17 and a health insurance presentation scheduled for July 30.
Council did not take final action on technical ordinance language during the meeting; Solicitor Tim Wachter was asked to draft suggested amendments where needed and return them for council review.
