Police Chief David Pernice reported to the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 13 that the department logged 269 calls from June 1 through Aug. 13, an average of about 3.63 calls per day. Pernice summarized call types that have occupied significant officer time recently, including vehicle pursuits, protection‑from‑abuse orders (PFAs), warrants, domestic incidents, drug activity, homelessness and suicide/mental‑health calls.
Pernice said he and Officer Shelly attended an Alert Active Shooter training on July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek Police Department and described the course as beneficial. He told council he applied to the UC Community Foundation for funding for four tasers and for additional security‑camera coverage of North Main Street; those applications were awarded by the foundation.
Council members expressed support for strengthening coverage and approved hiring a part‑time officer during the same meeting. The chief did not provide a precise staffing plan or hours for the new hire during his report; borough administration said final cost will depend on hours worked. No departmental disciplinary or policy changes were reported.
