Council hears police hiring update, supports PennDOT grant letter and accepts regional audit

Union City Borough Council discussed a stalled police hire, a letter of support for a PennDOT grant application, and accepted the Erie Area Council of Government audit at its Aug. 27 meeting.
Police Chief David Pernice told the council he has been unable to reach a previously approved new hire and said he assumes the candidate is no longer interested. "He said he has tried to make contact but has had no luck. He is assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice said. He asked to expand recruitment to the consortium list (32 candidates) and to work with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams; council agreed to search for one part-time officer, though the chief conveyed a goal of hiring two officers in the longer term.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells summarized several upcoming meetings and events, including an Erie County Planning kickoff on Sept.13 for park and trail improvements and a public hearing on a zoning ordinance amendment set for Sept.16. Wells said the borough will send a letter of support for a PennDOT Charging & Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program application along US Route 6. Council also opted not to advertise for towing ordinance bids.
The council passed a resolution accepting the Erie Area Council of Government (EACOG) audit report as presented. Councilor Osborn moved and Councilor Steadman seconded the resolution; the motion carried unanimously. Department liaisons had no additional reports. The meeting adjourned at 6:19 P.M.
