Historical Society asks University City to help restore century-old searchlight; mayor calls for community fundraising

The Historical Society of University City asked city leaders to help restore a 120-year-old searchlight and its elevator system, and Mayor Terry Crow urged a community-led fundraising approach.
"All we need is funding and we look to the city for that," Historical Society President Eleanor Mullen said, describing the searchlight and explaining the elevator system requires refurbishment.
Crow said the city will identify a portion of the funding but that he did not expect the city to cover the entire cost. "I don't believe it's the city's job to come up with all of it," he said, and encouraged the society and local businesses to lead fundraising. During remarks Crow initially misspoke about the figure and later referenced a community fundraising target of $45,000 as a starting point for the restoration campaign.
Members of the Historical Society said they can run business-letter campaigns and other community appeals; the society will discuss the project at an upcoming board meeting. Officials did not provide a final total restoration cost on the record.
