Gainesville staff report greenhouse-gas declines, LEED submission progress and community engagement

Dan Zhu, the City of Gainesville’s chief resiliency officer, updated the joint board on the city’s resiliency plan implementation and its greenhouse-gas inventory.
Zhu said staff have been working on comments from the U.S. Green Building Council ahead of a final LEED submission and described reductions in several inventory categories presented to the city commission last week. He reported a 55% reduction in solid-waste emissions between 2019 and 2023 and a 32% reduction in purchased electricity for the community inventory, while noting mobile combustion and purchased electricity remain the largest contributors to local emissions.
"We presented this one to the city commission last week," Zhu said, summarizing the inventory and noting reductions driven by the city’s 0-waste ordinance implementation and other measures.
Zhu described a resiliency community academy—monthly sessions that focus on different plan chapters—site visits to wastewater and wetlands facilities and partnerships with the University of Florida and Santa Fe College for research and workforce connections. He also invited board members to an Earth Day celebration at the MLK Center featuring a mayoral proclamation, awards and a tree giveaway with several hundred trees prepared for distribution.
Board members asked about program capacity and registration for the resiliency academy; Zhu said residents can RSVP for single sessions rather than register for the full series and that staff maintain an email list for announcements.
