Solano County deputy awarded Fairfield Police Medal of Valor for 2022 Cordelia shooting

Fairfield Police Captain Matt Blush presented the Fairfield Police Medal of Valor to Solano County Deputy Dalton McCampbell during a Solano County Sheriff's Office ceremony.

Blush recounted the early-morning incident on Nov. 27, 2022, saying the Fairfield Police Department received a call about a man armed with a gun who had entered a hotel room in the Cordelia area and was threatening occupants. Blush said Deputy McCampbell arrived with a Fairfield officer, helped set a perimeter and joined the pursuit as the suspect fled. "The suspect drew a firearm from his person and fired several rounds toward the Fairfield officers and Deputy McCampbell," Blush said. "Deputy McCampbell immediately recognizing the imminent lethal threat to himself, the other officers, and civilians in the area, returned fire and immediately incapacitated the suspect."

Blush told attendees the department awards the Medal of Valor to employees who, while serving in an official capacity, demonstrate heroic action above and beyond the call of duty, including actions that place the officer in immediate risk of serious injury or death. He said McCampbell met those criteria and that his actions prevented further harm to the community.

Under Sheriff Brad Duallen and Sheriff Tom Ferraro participated in the ceremony; Ferraro and others congratulated McCampbell on the award. The presentation included remarks from the Fairfield Police Department and an explanation of why the department considered the incident to satisfy the award's standards.

The ceremony continued with additional recognitions and refreshments.
