The Edgewater Economic Development Board voted to recommend that City Council support a regional effort to widen Old Mission Road and carry out stormwater improvements on the segment between Josephine and Park Avenue.
Chair introduced a draft recommendation for a resolution the board could forward to Council and discussed the timing of the Southeast Volusia Chamber Summit, where regional leaders will prioritize stormwater and connector roads. Members said the corridor is a critical north–south connector and flagged safety concerns where trucks are using smaller residential roads such as Glencoe Road as shortcuts.
“Getting that corridor to support the industrial development and park and all the goals to try and attract jobs is a priority,” a board member said in support of the recommendation. Staff noted Old Mission has improved segments at the north and south ends but the middle portion remains substandard and carries safety and drainage issues.
Members discussed funding sources — state safety funds, stormwater grants and potential job-growth grants — and emphasized the need for a plan before county council consideration. The board agreed a regional resolution, if passed at the summit and by participating cities, could accelerate county action.
The board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation by roll call; staff will prepare the resolution language and advise on steps to present it to City Council and at the upcoming regional summit.
