Alachua County held the first of two required public hearings April 8 for its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application cycle and outlined four eligible program categories and timelines.
Ralston Rudico of Community Support Services told the board the state relaxed some restrictions after recent disasters, making the county eligible; the application categories described were neighborhood revitalization, housing rehabilitation, commercial revitalization and economic development. Rudico said the application deadline is May 2.
Commissioners asked whether projects must be shovel-ready, how delivery timelines vary by category and whether there is a limit on the number of applications from county municipalities. Rudico said economic development applications are open year-round, housing rehabilitation requires a process to verify income eligibility, and municipalities listed as eligible on the Florida Commerce site may apply.
"The recommendation here is to get the input from the community and from the board," Rudico said, emphasizing that economic development proposals typically require a business sponsor and are judged on job creation or retention for low- and moderate-income persons.
The board discussed priorities and directions to staff but did not adopt final project lists at this meeting; this hearing was a required information and input session ahead of the application deadline.
