Alachua County board approves proposed FY2026 millage rates, sets public hearings

Alachua County commissioners voted to approve the proposed fiscal year 2026 millage rates and set public hearings on the budget. County staff presented a proposed county millage of 7.6 mills and a municipal service taxing unit (MSTU) law-enforcement millage of 3.5678 mills, which staff estimated would generate $182,713,179 from a July 1 taxable value of $25,306,534,348.
County staff said the county rate of 7.6 mills represents a 6.16% increase over the rollback rate of 7.1455 mills and that the MSTU law-enforcement rate is a 6.45% increase over its rollback rate. Staff described the aggregate proposed millage for FY2026 as 9.0552 mills, a 6.26% increase over the aggregate rollback rate.
"The proposed millage rate of 7.6 mills will generate $182,713,179," County staff said during the presentation. The board moved to approve the rates; Commissioner Cornell moved the motion and the board adopted it by voice vote.
The county will hold two public hearings on the budget: one on Thursday, Sept. 11, and a second on Tuesday, Sept. 23, the latter moved to avoid a conflict with the school board's Sept. 9 meeting. Staff framed the adoption of these proposed millage rates as the necessary step to comply with Florida statutory requirements and to begin the formal budget-adoption process.
No roll-call vote was recorded in the transcript; the chair called for those in favor and announced the motion carried. The next formal budget hearings and any changes to the proposed rates or assessments will be taken up at the scheduled September hearings.
