Rochelle Park highlights bocce court, Walk to School program and school events

Principal and administrators reported a new LRIG-funded bocce court with a ribbon-cutting scheduled, Midland School’s 100th anniversary planning, changes to lunch/homeroom scheduling, and a Walk to School program with a new Safe Route to School policy introduced for first reading.
School leaders updated the board on student activities and facilities at the Sept. 30 meeting.
Principal Dr. Courtney Carmichael described a new bocce court funded by an LRIG grant; a ribbon cutting is set for 8 a.m. the next morning. The bocce court is intended as a practice and hosting space for the school team and as a recreational area for students. Dr. Carmichael also said Midland School will mark its 100th anniversary and is seeking volunteers to help plan celebrations.
Administrators noted operational changes this year: homerooms were added for grades 6–8, lunch periods were reordered so older students eat first, and new class officers and extracurricular activities have resumed, including a small soccer team. Director of Curriculum Cara Hurd said NJSLA results from last spring will be mailed to families next week and summarized that professional development sessions this year were well received.
Vice President Christina Holz introduced a Safe Route to School — Walk to School policy for first reading, tied to the district’s Walk to School program (Midland Strides) planned for Oct. 15. Facilities updates included installation of hallway HVAC and a request that parents keep bikes off the new bocce court to prevent surface damage.
The board will honor crossing guards at a future meeting and will recognize students for NJSLA performance at the next board meeting.
