City staff updated the council and residents about a widespread DTE power outage that affected portions of southeast Michigan after a storm. The city manager said DTE reported approximately 400,000 customers lost power in its service area during the event and that crews faced difficulties because crews from other states were also responding to storms.
“The hardest hit areas were Monroe County, Downriver, Detroit, and Western Wayne,” the city manager said, and he noted Southeast Oakland County was heavily affected though not the hardest hit. He said DTE expected to restore power to Oak Park by about 11:30 p.m., while cautioning that is an estimate rather than a guaranteed completion time.
The manager said DTE informed the city it will provide a restoration credit of $42 per day for customers who were without power for more than 16 hours, and he directed residents to the DTE outage app and a DTE hotline for status updates and assistance. Council members asked staff to continue liaising with DTE and to publicize available resources for residents who lost refrigerated food or otherwise were affected by prolonged outages.
