Commission asks staff to explore transfer of historic Asbury Cemetery

During commission comments, Commissioner Wheeler said the family that owns land where a historic Black cemetery sits has offered the cemetery to the county and asked staff to review what ownership would mean for the county or the city of High Springs. "They would like to offer the cemetery to the county... I would like us to ask our staff to check into it to see what ownership of that property would mean," Wheeler said.
The chair confirmed the request as a referral to staff; no commissioner objected. Staff was asked to investigate ownership, liability and any operational implications and to report back to the commission.
