Smith Valley CAB adopts agenda and minutes; commissioner flags data center, sheriff and fire departments report plans for events and grants

The Smith Valley Citizens Advisory Board met on June 3, 2026, at the Smith Valley Library and handled routine business, heard community reports and received informational presentations.
The board adopted the meeting agenda on a motion by Joanne Lawson, seconded by Tom Renner; the motion passed 4‑0. The board then approved the May 6, 2026 minutes on a motion by Tom Renner, seconded by Rusty Williams; that motion passed 4‑0.
County Commissioner Dave Hockaday urged residents to attend Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meetings and said Reno has placed a moratorium on data centers until August 2027. He told the CAB that four data centers are set to locate in Lyon County and raised concerns about their power and water needs and the permitting process, noting applicants would typically pursue conditional use permits (CUPs).
Planning Commissioner Mark Jones noted the planning commission will meet June 10 and said the commission approved a heliport for Central Fire and a planned fire station—projects he said face staffing and funding limits for firefighters.
Sheriff's Department Cmdr. Ryan Powell described preparations for Night in the Country (projected attendance about 10,000) and said the department is preparing a traffic grant application for Smith Valley (described in the meeting as $3.2 million). He also referenced the upcoming fair and rodeo and the use of jail work crews for local projects.
Fire Chief Matt Nightingale reported the department received an award from the Nevada Donor Network, awarded a $2,000 scholarship, is coordinating monthly meetings with Carson Valley Health, and noted two solar projects were shut down for failure to meet codes. He reminded attendees that wildland season has started and listed upcoming community fundraising and event dates.
The board recessed to convene as the Smith Valley Cemetery Board to receive a cemetery report. Tom Renner said the cemetery cleanup went well, clampers placed a plaque on the new flagpole, the water system is partially installed, and additional tree removal and weed spraying remain.
The meeting reconvened as the CAB. Commissioner Dave Hockaday reminded attendees about a fireworks fundraiser and 4th of July plans; Mark Phillips and Tom Renner provided updates on the celebration and fundraising progress. The meeting adjourned at 8:03 p.m.
