Council unanimously names Rogers Park batting cages for longtime coach Gary Simone

The Danbury City Council unanimously approved a resolution March 4 to dedicate the newly installed batting cages at Rogers Park in honor of coach and councilman Gary Simone.
Multiple public commenters urged the dedication. Larry Sposato told the council he was speaking on behalf of the proposed naming and described Simone as "a wonderful advocate for the kids" who has been a "pillar of the community" at Rogers Park. Ken Gucker, who also spoke during public comment, said naming a facility is a "tangible" way to recognize long service. Sean Richardson, president of Danbury Youth Baseball, told the council Simone's "unwavering dedication to the youth of Danbury has left a profound and lasting impact." Coach Sean Ratford emphasized that Simone had invested in the community for decades and urged support for the naming.
Councilman McAllister moved to receive the communication and name the batting cages at Rogers Park in honor of Gary Simone; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The mayor and other council members praised Simone and wished him a speedy return. The council described the dedication as a small token of appreciation for decades of volunteer service to youth athletics.
The designation will not change operations at the park but will add lasting recognition on the new facility. The council said an imprint will be placed at the new batting cages acknowledging Simone's contributions.
