Council authorizes preparation of legislation for three demolition requests, endorses Route 66 marker

At the March 9 meeting the council opened public hearings on multiple waiver requests to the city's moratorium on demolition of structures listed in Wildwood's historic inventory. Planning staff summarized each property and the Historic Preservation Commission's site visits: in at least two cases the commission recommended demolition.

After hearing from applicants and neighbors, the council closed the hearings and authorized staff to prepare legislation for three properties identified for demolition. For one property (18060 Wildhorse Creek Road) the applicant told council they had completed required preparations and that the moratorium delay had put contracts and investments at risk.

Separately, the Historic Preservation Commission and planning staff presented a Route 66 marker proposal for the arch engraving to commemorate Route 66's centennial and the U.S. 250th. The commission recommended ordering a marker (approximate cost $11,000) to be temporarily installed near Big Chief Roadhouse with capital-improvement-purchase funding.

Why it matters: Removing or altering inventory-listed historic assets triggers public-notice, commission review and council consideration. Council's authorization to prepare legislation does not itself approve demolition but moves the items forward to formal ordinance stages.

Next steps: Staff will draft the demolition legislation for council consideration; the Route 66 marker order will proceed using the capital improvement line item. The council postponed one historic hearing (the JP Connell House) to the April 13 meeting after staff reported progress with the owner.
