Council approves Newtown Park clubhouse renovation contract amid veteran support; one member votes no

The Johns Creek City Council on Aug. 11 approved, on the consent agenda, a design-build construction contract for renovation of the Newtown Park Community Clubhouse.

Councilmember Coughlin introduced the consent item and moved approval; the mayor pro tem seconded and the item passed on voice vote. During discussion councilmembers praised the project as supporting local veterans and the city’s Purple Heart City designation.

During public comment, long-time resident Stephanie Andres urged fuller funding and criticized what she described as a missed opportunity to "close the holistic loop" for veterans services. She said a plan presented two years earlier included a building with space for veterans affairs services and meeting space; at the meeting she said the council was now proposing $300,000 for that work while pursuing much larger expenditures elsewhere: "And yet 2 years later, we're only willing to spend $300,000 to fulfill a legacy for our veterans…while we're willing to take $20,000,000 out of our reserves for breads and circuses," Andres said.

One councilmember recorded a dissenting vote on the consent item, citing concerns about limited community meeting space in the project. Council discussion nonetheless concluded the consent item should move forward; the clerk noted the motion passed and recorded the opposition.

The renovation is intended to provide a multipurpose community clubhouse and support veteran services adjacent to the existing Memorial Walk and the wall that heals. Staff indicated the project will proceed under the approved contract and that further project details and timeline will be provided as design progresses.
