Wheatland student-curfew petition met with legal constraint; council takes no ordinance change

The Wheatland Student Council submitted a petition asking the city to change the municipal curfew. At the Dec. 11 meeting council members discussed the petition and concluded that city ordinances mirror state curfew rules and therefore could not be changed to accommodate the request.
Council members discussed the limits of their authority under the current ordinance and state statutes; minutes note the ordinances cannot be changed because they are the same as state curfews. The council did not adopt an ordinance change or schedule an alternative action on the petition during the meeting.
No resident who had been asked to attend the meeting was present to speak on a separate alley-vacation item related to private property between 203 and 205 N. Bennett St., so the council deferred that public hearing scheduling.
