NICE Community School District board approves $2.33 million in disbursements, hires staff and OKs two buses

The NICE Community School District Board of Education voted Aug. 18 to approve financial disbursements and a slate of personnel and operational actions ahead of the 2025–26 school year.
John Grove moved and Chad Korpi supported approval of General Fund bills totaling $1,745,017.44 for July 21–Aug. 15, 2025, July payrolls of $582,310.64 and total disbursements of $2,327,328.08; the Treasurer’s reports and multiple fund balances, including a 2025 Capital Projects Fund balance of $4,878,531.00 and a Sinking Fund balance of $441,185.90, were accepted as presented.
Superintendent Bryan DeAugustine told the board the Sinking Fund projects are progressing and announced that free meals for all students will begin this school year, while warning that meal prices for the district could change depending on the outcome of the state school aid budget.
Administrators gave brief operational updates: Chris Marana thanked kindergarten staff and public-health partners for screenings and said summer school concluded successfully; Griffin Lawson said ARMS will offer an 8th-grade Spanish section and expand math supports; Cliff Fossitt reported activity at WHS with fall sports under way; Nathan Longton highlighted summer special-education programming and mental-health partnerships; and Bobby Zhulkie said fall athletics competition has begun.
On personnel, the board acknowledged resignations (Kristen Grondz and Isabel Luke) and approved hires, including Mark Korpi as assistant girls’ basketball coach, Teresa Marietti as a bus driver, Shelly Whitaker as middle school cheer coach and Andrew Pershinske as a math teacher. The board also authorized wage increases and compensation as presented.
The board accepted food-service bids from Jilbert’s Dairy (dairy products), Scott Brenneman Distribution Company (bakery products) and Gravedoni’s Pizza (pizza offerings).
In a recorded roll-call vote the board authorized ordering two buses as presented; the minutes record all voting members present as voting aye. The board also authorized the district’s course offerings and approved both the General Fund operating millage and the Sinking Fund operating millage as presented.
Derrick Magnuson recognized the second reading of NEOLA Policy Update Volume 39, Number 2; the board adopted the NEOLA update in a subsequent motion.
The meeting adjourned at 6:03 p.m.
