City staff told the board on Sept. 4 that the community courts construction remains on schedule and under budget and that staff are moving into operational planning for the facility.
A staff member described work to align the facility’s security system with the local schools’ software and said separate utility meters are being reviewed. On fixtures and furnishings, staff said they have selected durable, cleanable furniture similar to what local schools use and are considering high-durability options for outdoor rooftop spaces because of limited storage.
Staff also outlined plans for public art inside the facility. The staff member said a large interior wall — roughly 30 feet high — could host a public-art installation in which the lower portion serves as an interactive sensory wall for children with autism and other needs, which would transition into a larger piece of artwork above.
Staff reported that energy and operating-cost estimates are being incorporated into operational budgets, which are due to city council soon; the facility is anticipated to open late fall or early winter next year. No formal direction or vote was taken; staff will continue coordination with the schools, finalize furniture procurement and return with operational budget figures.
